Spring Flowering Shrubs Around The City
Next time you’re enjoying the gardens and landscapes around Guelph, look out for these common plants!

Whether you are enjoying the local streets or Guelph Arboretum in the spring, you’ll be invited into a space of fragrant and vibrant flowering shrubs.
Lilac
It’s safe to say spring has arrived when the sweet fragrance of lilac begins to fill the air. Lilacs are very popular around Ontario. The panicles of flowers are available in pink, purple, and white shades. They make beautiful flower-filled hedges or can be trimmed to create a stunning focal point.
Rhododendron
This spring-flowering shrub has very showy flowers. Even though they seem tropical, they are hardy for our area. Unlike many other shrubs on this list, rhododendrons are commonly found in shady locations.
Spirea
One of the most underrated shrubs for spring, Spirea has flashy tiny flowers that bloom in early or late spring, depending on the type. When in bloom, the branches are covered in white, red, or pink flowers.
Hydrangea
Hydrangeas add serious drama and colour to city gardens. There are many varieties to plant with showstopping blooms in shades of pink, purple, blue or crisp white.
Weigela
One of the most traditional flowering shrubs in the city, weigela is a low-maintenance plant with gorgeous flowers. Pollinators are attracted to the bell-shaped blooms too! The flowers are available in pink, red, soft pink and plum wine.
