Preparing for Thanksgiving

Oct 05, 2023

Stressing about Thanksgiving? Keep reading!

Preparing for Thanksgiving can be a rewarding experience, but it can also be quite a bit of work. The key to keeping stress levels low is to plan, plan, plan! Give yourself plenty of time and ask for help. It will make a huge difference if you do!

Here's a step-by-step guide to help you prepare for Thanksgiving:

1. Plan your menu

Going traditional? Going rogue? Either way, planning a menu ahead of time will help keep your stress levels at bay and will make the whole cooking process far more streamlined. Ask your guests if they have any dietary restrictions (unless you already know them!) and then think about what you’d like to make.

2. Make a schedule

The schedule is important; some can even start days before with a designated shopping day, prep day and then the cooking schedule itself. Choose a time for everyone to arrive and then work backwards from there. Leave enough time for the turkey to thaw and check the cooking times for each separate food item and dish.

3. Create a Shopping List and a budget

The same as planning a menu, a shopping list will be your best friend! Going shopping without one can often end up with you missing various things off the list, or buying way more than you actually need. Creating a budget and sticking to it where possible will ensure you aren’t left short and overstretched!

4. Delegate!

Whether you are hosting a small family gathering or a larger family/community affair, it’s helpful to share tasks between yourself and other guests who will be joining you on the day! The host doesn’t have to do it all.

5. Set the table ahead of time

Setting the table can be a laborious task, by preparing it ahead of time you will be saving yourself a lot of time and it is one less thing to worry about on the day.

6. Pour yourself a drink, and relax

You’ve done so well, everything is looking great and it’s time to celebrate! Don’t sweat the small stuff, so long as everything is cooked, everyone is fed, all will be well. Take time for yourself and have a moment to appreciate everyone around you in the moment.

It is important to remember that Thanksgiving is all about the quality time with our friends and family. Realizing what we are most grateful for in life and holding onto that. We hope this guide has been helpful and that you have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!
