Movie & TV Marathons That Are Perfect For Winter Nights

Dec 21, 2022

Winter is certainly here and the dark, cold nights with sparkly fairy lights and hot drinks absolutely need that extra coziness found in a good movie or tv show.

But what to choose?!

There are so many options, sites to stream from, DVD collections to flip through. To make it easier, we’ve pulled together a list of movies and tv shows that are perfect to watch by yourself or with family and friends, under a blanket with some snacks. They range in genre and the years they were released; some are new and some are old but gold, but will all give you that cozy vibe for a winter’s night.

Starting with the movies…

The Holiday (2006)

The ultimate rom-com, The Holiday will be tugging at your heartstrings and making you laugh and cry in quick succession. As two women fed up with life and being messed around by men, they swap lives for the festive season and end up with more than they bargained for. With an all-star cast of Kate Winslet, Jack Black, Cameron Diaz, Eli Wallach and Jude Law, it’s the perfect movie to watch with a hot chocolate.

 When Harry Met Sally (1989)

Possibly one of the most wholesome movies about friendship ever, When Harry Met Sally is a romantic comedy focusing on the never-ending search for happiness in one of America’s most romanticized cities, New York. Two strangers who become  friends who end up falling in love over the course of their lives, seeing one another through their best and worst in life’s great and sad moments. It’s definitely one to watch.

Carol (2015)

Another love story set in New York, except it’s 1950 and the drama and passion levels are off the scale. Starring Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett, two women who are worlds apart find themselves colliding and having a deep love affair. It begins during Christmas time and has such a cozy feel overall.

Moonlight (2016)

This movie is not a winter themed one but it is important. The story focuses on Chiron, a young man who is struggling with his identity and sexuality while experiencing the everyday struggle of being a teenager heading towards adulthood. It’s emotional, heartwarming at times and definitely one to watch.

Harry Potter series (2001-2011)

The title alone speaks for itself. The Harry Potter series just gives all of the nostalgic, festive vibes that we all know and love so much! The first 4 movies especially have that cozy feel, and make us wish we could go for a stroll down Diagon Alley to get some chocolate frogs…

Fantastic Mr Fox (2009)

Our final contender is Fantastic Mr Fox, directed by the legendary Wes Anderson. His first foray into the realm of stop-motion animation, this movie is an action packed adventure with a wholesome undertone. It also has a stellar cast, including Meryl Streep, George Clooney, Willem Dafoe, Anjelica Huston and more.

And now onto the TV shows…

Mare of Easttown (2021)

Small town cop, Mare Sheehan (Kate Winslet) has to re-open the case of a missing teenager. With pressures from all sides and overwhelming family trauma that clings to her, Mare finds herself reliving dark memories of the past while trying to move forward into the future. It’s gripping, full of dark humor and emotion and will literally have you on the edge of your seat at times.

Gilmore Girls (2000-2007)

Who doesn’t love Gilmore Girls? It’s the ultimate comfort show, perfect all year round but especially for those cozy nights on the sofa. Lorelai and her daughter Rory almost feel like your friends as they navigate life together through teenage woes, strained parental relationships, expectations and more. It’s cute, cozy and a fan-favorite.

Grey’s Anatomy (2005- present)

This truly is the marathon of all marathons! Grey’s Anatomy is legendary and iconic. Whether you’re just starting out or are deep into your 3rd or 8th rewatch, it’s a guaranteed emotional rollercoaster that will fill your heart.

Only Murders in the Building (2021- present)

Three strangers who live in the same apartment building in Manhattan, share an obsession with true crime and suddenly find themselves wrapped up in one. After one of the residents is murdered, they put their true crime knowledge to the test to try and find the murderer and solve the crime. It’s hilarious, cheesy and New York in the winter- what could be better?

The Office (US version, 2005-2013)

The Office could be regarded as a national treasure. It is hilarious and relatable for many people who work in office environments, as the many personalities of co-workers come together and create chaos. It’s easy to watch with many quotable lines, and perfect for bringing people together.
