How To Keep Thanksgiving Flowers Fresh

Oct 18, 2021

Learn how to keep those beautiful flowers you got over the holidays fresh and vibrant with these five tips.

Fall floral arrangements welcome us with some of the most delicate hues of the season's beauty. Foliage, berries, dried branches, and autumnal blooms genuinely light up a room - even if it gets dark at 6pm!

Since we all love the fresh arrangements that are gifted to us or treat ourselves with, we wanted to share some helpful tips to ensure you get the most out of your flowers.

5 Tips For Increasing The Longevity of Fresh Fall Flowers

1. Start with a clean vase and filtered water
Bacteria from decaying stems can block the ability to uptake water. When the flower is cut off from its root system, it loses this vital filter. This is why it is always important to start with clean water to protect and preserve the flowers.

It is suggested to use warm or room temperature filtered water. You should choose filtered because:

- high levels of sodium are toxic to roses and carnations
- fluoride may damage gerbera, gladiolas, and freesia faster
- dissolved minerals may block the flower stems ability to hydrate properly

2. Use flower food
Always use the supplied flower food - never use an at-home substitute such as aspirin, pop, or bleach. Flower food was created to simulate a flower's original environment, helping the flowers fully open in a vase. It will help increase the life of flowers and should always be used. Follow the instructions on the back of the packet.

3. Cut stems & remove foliage
Cut stems on an angle to remove at least an inch of the stem with a sharp knife or pruners. It's essential to keep foliage above the waterline because it can promote bacteria in the water, which will shorten the lifespan of the flowers.

4. Proper placement
Often the placement of bouquets is overlooked. Keeping flowers away from direct sunlight, drafts, heat, fruit (which emits ethylene gas) can shorten vase life.

5. Check water levels daily
Your flowers will be thirsty and will appreciate fresh water every day. If you notice any flowers or foliage dying back, remove it. If the water is cloudy, it should be dumped entirely out, and fresh water and floral food should be added.
